Which wet suit should I buy for diving in New England 7mm or 5mm?
During the summer the temps where i five reach about 73 degrees which is plenty warm enough for 5mm and borderline for a 3mm, but the other three seasons I would really need a 7mm. I really dont want to buy two different $300 wetsuits, my question is is it ok for me to dive with a 7mm wetsuit in 73 degree water when a 7mm is designed for 60 degrees and below.
I dive the Great Lakes and St Lawrence, where the temps vary huge. I own a US divers semi dry two piece 7 mm. Great for all temps here from 36 F(both pieces) to 75 F as a farmer john. Yep, used it for ice diving and hauled it to the carib as a single in 80F, though a little warm but not unbearable.
I see that the answer below me recommends a thinner suit. Silly, you’ll go blue.
Your area can get below 50F easily in fall and spring, especially if you plan on freshwater diving in a lake. Absolute minimum would be a 5mm which would do in summer but really suck in the fall / spring and winter is out of the question. Not a chance. Even a 7mm semi , let alone a normal wetsuit,would be good for about 35 minutes tops in a lake there in fall/ spring and if you’re a deep diver you’ll be an ice cube because of the neo crushing paper thin under about 60 feet or more.
Friggin’ warm water divers always forget that little fact. No wonder they come here to die.
